Who Needs Allergen Labels?
Required for all pre-packaged food in the EU:
- Pre-packaged ready meals
- Deli and charcuterie products
- Baked goods sold in packaging
- Meal prep boxes and subscription services
- Catering portions in sealed containers
- Market stall products in packaging
For loose/unpackaged food sold directly to consumers, allergen information must still be available — but labels on take-away items are required.
The Cost of Allergen Mislabeling
Between 2019-2024, allergen mislabeling was the #1 cause of food recalls across the EU:
- Average recall cost: €50,000–€500,000+
- Brand reputation damage lasting years
- Potential criminal liability if allergic reactions occur
- NVWA enforcement action
NutriLabel.io's auto-detection eliminates the human error that causes most allergen mislabeling.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I'm not sure whether an ingredient contains an allergen?
NutriLabel.io flags known allergen associations. For cross-contamination risks ("May contain"), you should add these manually. We recommend verifying with your ingredient supplier.
Do I need to declare allergens for trace contamination?
"May contain" statements are voluntary but strongly recommended for products manufactured in facilities handling allergens. They are not a substitute for mandatory allergen declaration.
Can I export an allergen matrix for multiple products?
Yes — Pro plan includes CSV export that you can use to create allergen matrices for menus, websites, or food safety documentation.
